Who was Behnam? An interview with Shahla Lajeh-vardi, Behnam Daheshpour’s mother

Behnam was a kind and athletic boy, who loved his friends very much. After his death, many of the good things he had done were relieved. One day, he felt the pain after a sudden blow on his liver region. He felt the pain several times, so we went to a doctor and asked for the reason. It was found out that there was a tumor in Behnam’s liver. After several examinations, doctors decided that Behnam had liver cancer and that he had to undergo surgery. At first he was really disappointed, but then after several minutes he said: “Maybe this is what God wants. I have to confront this illness.”
Behnam started his chemotherapy. For eight months, he received complete chemotherapy three times a week and short chemotherapy twice a week. After 8 and a half months, it was decided that Behnam needed an operation on his liver. After 12 hours of surgery, he was taken to the intensive care unit and it was there that after thanking his father, Behnam wrote to him on a piece of paper: “You see, I finally defeated it!”
The growth of another tumor on his liver had him in surgery for another 8 hours. Soon we found out that his lungs were also cancerous, and so he underwent surgery once again.
After a three-year treatment period in Britain, Behnam went to USA where he had another operation. During the treatment period, he told his father and me: “I believe that not having any pain is not less than cancer pain.”
He was willing to do something beneficial for cancer patients who were in dire financial straits. Behnam paid a visit to a charity in the Canadian embassy, and he met some women benefactors, from whom he asked financial aid.
Recommended by his doctor, he visited Shohada-ye Tajrish Hospital. There he saw people, standing in a queue and waiting for the cobalt equipment, in a semi-constructed building. He decided to begin his work in that building.
Regarding Behnam’s own effort, and his friends’ aid, a charity market was held for three days and it was welcomed by people. A piano concert was performed in Arasbaran Acadamey. He and his friends also decided to organize a candle market in our house, his room, for 3 days. In spite of his illness, Behnam wanted to be with his friends. One of which asked him “Is selling a single candle worth standing for so long and not resting?”, and Behnam answered “A candle’s price is equal to a glass of water. So if each person helps to provide a single glass of water, there’ll soon be an ocean for the patients.”

He was very anxious after his friends were gone. His father and I asked him to stay with us for the rest of the night. At morning, we realized with him about his friends. In Morning Prayer (Azan), we recognized that Behnam was hardly speaking. His father called the ambulance. Behnam left home with a smile on his face, and unfortunately died on his way to the hospital. He always wanted his friends to continue his efforts.
We all gathered together, Behnam’s friends and their families, and began our activities. It was decided to build the waiting hall and the examination room by collecting aid from others; slowly, the department of hospitalization, the office, the doctors’ library, the children’s library and the conference hall were built.
